Me Kissing My New Baby

Every-time I wear my hair down and go into public I am bombarded with lots of questions, comments and second glances because my hair is so long.

It is unusual to have real long hair these days. People are too busy and just don't want to mess with it ; along with all the short hair fads and styles it's just becoming a thing of the past.

As a little girl I had frizzy, short, stunted hair. I was like every other little girl with dreamy visions of myself with hair like Barbie or Rapunzel. I would get a towel or sheet and drape it over my head and act like it was my long hair.

My mother had a time fixing my little mop. To make matters worse, at three years I hid behind a dresser and chopped it in every wrong direction (This happened a few years before my long hair dreams obviously). My poor devastated mother did her best to cut it evenly then finally put in a tight curly perm.

Mom would trim the ends and my bangs until the age of five, then begin my journey to growing long hair. She actually prayed over my hair that it would grow so she could do something with it and because I wanted it long so bad.

Her prayers were answered at first slowly then progressed further. At around twelve years my hair was to the middle of my back. Of course I begin the fluffing and curling allot.

In my teens it had reached my waist, I begin taking hair vitamins. I still did allot hot curler styling, hair spraying ect. Those were the finding boyfriends days when frills were the thing.

At age sixteen ( almost seventeen) I graduated early from high school and married a few weeks later. My hair was now at the top of my hips.

By this time I had realized the importance of ditching the cheap shampoos and conditioners and using the more intensive moisturizing name brands. I also would do hot oil treatments and time soaking in conditioner. "Using hot curlers less contributed to more growth as well."

Before long I was expecting my first baby and begin taking prenatal vitamins. By the time she was born my hair had grew six more inches (to my upper thighs).

Then came baby number two ( three and a half years later). My hair grew three or four more inches.

In a ten year span I've had four children, my last one was born October 13, 2008. My hair is now around 5ft or a little over. I am 5ft 7in in height.

I am not sure it is the having babies or the way that I take care of it, but I have enjoyed my little girl dream of long hair.

It is a little difficult with kids sometimes so I just put it up in curls or some other updo style. Sometimes I just take half of it and twist it halfway up in a clip where it still looks long, but stays out of my way. I still wear it down allot with various styles or just hanging loose straight with nothing in it ( my husbands favorite way). I usually tie it up or braid it when I sleep.

http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Make-A-Stylish-Updo-With-Long-Hair

I wash my hair in the shower with a big handful of shampoo and conditioner. It takes around two hours to dry natural, that is how I usually dry it.

Sometimes I still even frill up and curl it all (that takes a while). I use Conair hot sticks and TRESemme hairspray extra hold as well as shampoo and conditioner in that brand. Though it is very important to change around on at least your conditioner or your hair becomes immune and your hair don't respond as well. I also like Pantene, aussies three minute miracle, St. Ives Intensive mint treatment and for a beautiful glossy shine I use LOREAL Paris VIVE PRO moisturising conditioner. " All these can be found at Wal-Mart or drugstore."

I am 27 now, very busy mommy of four and never plan to cut my hair. I get a kick out of kids I see that say, " Mommy, look at that lady with big hair!" or " Mommy, she looks like Wepunzel!" Lots of women say, " I could never mess with that long of hair!" To be honest I poured over myself more style frustrations when my hair was short and medium long than I do now, plus I save money on haircuts, coloring, perms ect. It's really not as bad as you think!http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-grow-long-hair

Amazing, singingmommy! I've never known anyone with hair anywhere near that long! They tell me that long, uncut hair is worth a lot of money (I guess they could make quit a few wigs out of it.) Interesting hub.

blessedmommy 3 years ago

I LOVE IT!!! Everything about this hub is pefect, Sis. Great job and I love the pics! You're such a beautiful lady in every way.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Thanks William! Yes, you could make a few wigs out of it:.) Your comments were appreciated.

Blessedmommy your hair is at least to your knees and like satin.......very very beautiful, you need to share pics too. Thanks for you comments sis......way too partial.

Interesting hub and great illustrative pictures.

andrewpeterson 3 years ago

Amazing, but is it real hair or just a wig

singingmommy 3 years ago

IT'S REAL HAIR PROMISE!!!!! tHANKS FOR THE COMMENTS!

eaglegordon 3 years ago

I've always prefered the long hair girls.

Where I go to church non of the ladies there cut their hair. Some have hair about as long as yours.

To me it makes a woman look more attractive (not seductive) and lady like with long hair.

Roger Renwick 3 years ago

hi singingmommy, that is a great hub, and a beautiful head of hair, in the bible it says a womans crown of glory is her hair, and that is the truth. there is nothing like a beautiful woman with long flowing hair, the sun light adding a glow to it as she walks with her soul in plain sight for everyone to see.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Roger, thanks for the beautiful comment, I believe and live by that scripture.

ripplemaker 3 years ago

Reading your hub, I was transported back to fairy tale days and I immediately envisioned Rapunzel. (I guess that is most people's reaction) LOL Wow, taking care of such a long hair must be an extensive job.  But you look good with it singing mommy. :-) I enjoyed your hub.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Thank you ripplemaker, you are the sweetest as usual!!!!!

G-Ma Johnson 3 years ago

Yes is very pretty...do you get headaches though...it must weigh a bunch?  my daughter has long hair also...but not that long...and she has it cut every once in a while (it grows back quickly) and they make wigs for women with breast cancer...It has to be at least 18 inches after they cut it, I think. MY MY you have 4 children?  busy young mom I see...but I also grew up with mine and that is why I became a grandma early in life...yet it still goes by way too fast...Nicely done sweetie...G-Ma :o) hugs & Peace

singingmommy 3 years ago

Thank's G-ma. Actually the only headaches I get are due to high blood-pressure problems, not many of them with meds. The Womens World did a research and said that headaches and long hair are not connected, that your neck muscles adjust to the weight naturally, not sure. Thats neat about your daughter.

Yes, I have four kids two boys and two girls ages 9, 6, 4, and 3months. I love every minute of it. I would have allot more if I didn't have to have C-sections, had a big house and lots of money:.)

countrywomen 3 years ago

That last picture was great. I still remember rapunzel fairy tale (Btw did someone say this to you "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair"). I wish I had such a beautiful long hair. Does your Mom also have long hair? You look great with such lovely tresses.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Thanks Countrywoman! The Rupunzel comment cute cute. My mother has shoulder length hair, she loves long hair though, she would faint if I cut it.My sister actually has hair a little above her knees.

You are very beautiful and it looks like you have beautiful hair too.

countrywomen 3 years ago

I just asked that question since long hair is also said to be a genetic trait. Nice to know that long hair runs in your family and never cut such beautiful long hair. Btw to answer your question I would request you to read this(I apologize for soliciting your visit): http://hubpages.com/hub/What-I-want-you-to-know-ab

I like long hair - yours looks lovely!

Mine isn't nearly as long - it's waist-length. Because I have very fine, slippery, fair hair, this is the longest that looks good without splits, etc.

SweetiePie 3 years ago

I had very long hair up until the age of twenty where I could almost sit on it. I trimmed it a few times, but unfortunately I was talked into cutting it. For a few years I always had short hairstyles, but finally I grew it to about the middle of my back. Right now I am growing it out again and whereas it may not be as long as it was in the past, I always find it odd when people tell other people how to grow their hair. For instance, people used to tell me I looked better once I cut my hair, but I just do not agree with that. To me it is more important to be true to what I like than to conform to what others expect of me.

mandybeau 3 years ago

Mine grows like a weed, it is very strong and naturally more straight than curly,I suppose its like Asian hair, although I am not Asian, so I guess it must be Spanish. pparently hair and DNA origin are factors.

I hate straight hair bigtime so I curl it. I have always had it long as I can't be bothered with having to go to the hairdressers every 5 minutes, for a trim.

But one thing I detest is the paddle flat look people are having at the moment it looks soo fake.

And the styles always look o.k. on someone else, but don't ever suit me.

I have had it so I can sit on it, I have shaved it off one long hot summer. ( Bad mistake ) My head wasn't the same shape as the person I was eminating.

Didn't matter back to long 1 1/2 years later.

But alot of our native people have this frizzy hair, and it takes forever to grow.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Wow! Thanks for all the very interesting comments with your own experinces ect.

Keep them coming! I enjoy reading them! Everyone has their hair story:.)

Christa Dovel 3 years ago

I use to want long hair, like yours. I was named after Crystal Gayle, so she was my inspiration. However, in my teens the headaches from my waist length hair became unbearable. I finally caved in and cut it. It has been almost waist length again, with the same results. I love it long and healthy, healthy being they key to keeping it manageable.

I plan to grow it to my hip bones and keep it there, as my husband loves it long.

Uriel 3 years ago

great hub.... when i was a kid, i'd always had my hair cut so short that i'd fit in with the boys....but after grade 6, and realizing that i had nice hair, mom convinced me to grow it... Just as an inspiration, mom would rub my hair with warm coconut milk and give me a massage every two weeks or so.... i mean this really helps. It keeps the hair's luster and makes it shine... it is not true that if u have long hair then u have split ends.. the key is to know what your hair needs and to give it to it. Nice hair... my dream (recently) is to grow my hair like Herman Li the lead guitarist in dragonforce ... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.hermanli.com/images/hermanli_by_rudy.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.hermanli.com/&usg=__lFOrbc_loxkxZo8QIDb

Hello Singingmommy,

I love your hair and the hub. It's interesting. When I was a child I used to pray a lot too for a long hair. Sometimes, I dreamed that my hair was cut ridiculously short and I am awaken by my sobs because I looked so ugly with the short hair. I've tried the long and the short but I often find myself uncomfortable with the hair in my avatar. L.O.L

I cannot grow it as long as yours because I hardly reached five feet tall and I would look smaller. But it fits you beautifully.

singingmommy 3 years ago

Wow! Thanks for all the nice comments. I enjoy reading about your hair experiences too.

dark&lovely, I do get lots of compliments from men for my long hair, many have said they wished their wives would grow their hair long. I have had some hair damage, but nothing that hair treatments didn't cure, I never had to cut it.

compu-smart    I very much doubt I'll ever see 18ft....whooooo

I do wear my hair in many styles up and down, curly or straight. This plain style just shows the length better.

Gillsie 3 years ago

I had long hair for many years. Mine would only grow to just past my hips. What I remember most was shutting it in the car window, sitting on it and giving myself whip-lash and burning up two vacuum cleaner motors because just a few hairs would tangle the whole brush mechanism!! One of my best friends has hair as long as yours and she once drove 50 miles with her hair stuck in the car door. A truck driver flagged her down finally! I still miss it : )

Thanks for the memories.

I had long hair as a kid gt it cut short in high school and a couple of years ago it was shorter than my man's short back and sides. He'd always wanted me to grow it and we were going on a camping trip for a few months so I thought why not.In my mid 40s I figured it was last chance - long hair on old women really doesnt look good

It was a nightmare growing it out - took a year just to get to a bob because it had to cut to take that layers out. Its now shoulder length and still a nightmare - it is hot in the summer and Im not sure how much longer Id keep it - he of course loves - it but I like long hair too and he's not prepared to grow his!

I notice it costs a fortune too in hair colouring - need 2 boxes now -and conditioner, which I didn't need before and also shampoo. I find it incredibly hearvy too - I guess mine is thicker than normal and I thinkif I let go much longer it would start hurting my neck!

SingingMommy, I am a songwriter/poet as well! It's always good to meet another. I take it you are an Apostolic? Beautiful hair as can be expected from a "blessed" individual. Feel free to check out my hubs- I've got some articles and a few poems there but haven't posted any songs yet. Feel free to join my fan club as well. I'll be sure to check out your songs as well! Take care!

I was recently struggling with the thought of cutting my hair. It is down to my waist now. My biggest problem is dealing with tangles and knots. How do you keep your hair from turning into a giant hairball??? I'd really like to know so I can try a new technique.

Angela Heess 3 years ago

Beautiful! The longest I had my hair was down the middle of my back, though I have shaved my head twice and I am not quite 25.

I am trying to grow my hair now... it is only just past my ears! Since I am pregnant with number three, it is seeming to grow a little faster. I think my partner would prefer I had long hair too... most of my family and friends at church have longer hair, but say I look okay with short. I can't wait to get some length. Just dealing with bleaching and dryness, split ends etc.

Will keep an eye out for more from you... :-)

Be blessed

a woman's hair is her crowning glory and her femininity...its beautiful. I remember the first time i saw long hair. I was a ballerina and this girl who was 18 took her hair down from a bun and it reached below her calves. It was so long and straight and beautiful red. I knew i wanted my hair that long one day.

Your hair is beautiful!

So what kind of leave ins do you use? What about detangler? You say it is important to switch conditioners - do you mean every time you wash your hair or you use a bottle and then buy a different kind the next time? any vitamin recommendations? thanks for any info! your hair is beautiful.

I really wish I had read this before haha, I started growing my hair around April, I have a bet with my mom to keep me from doing anything to it. I have a hard time leaving it go and not cutting it, anyway it's now at the middle of my back I started with it at my jaw line trying to let it get to my butt. I did a home perm right before I started growing it out and it's such a pain trying to undo the damage now I'm trying a home made natural relaxing and moistening treatment I really hope it works. You're advice helped a lot! I'm so excited to see the end result, Thanks a bunch!

MomOfAnAngel 2 years ago

Wow! Super long hair! I too always wanted the Barbie hair...I had it up until I was 10 years old...then, my mom chopped it off along with my sisters' into a "bowl" cut :( I got made fun of for looking like a boy...it was devastating to a little girl! I am now 35, just had my 1st child (beautiful little girl) and am now growing back my Barbie hair...so far it is just past my shoulders...would like it 1/2 way down my back. It is so true what you said - sometimes it is easier having long hair than shorter hair, you can always just throw it up in a ponytail, twist, etc...rather than having to style it daily...plus, I don't have to wash mine everyday because it is a little on the dry side. Can't wait for it to grow longer! I'm also going to let my daughter's hair grow and NOT cut it like my mom cut mine! lol Cheers!

Great site, thank you for the information and it's great fun reading everyone's stories in the comments too. :)

The longest I've ever had my hair is waist length after which the ends tend to dry very badly. I've had it cut short so many times and it just grows rather quick.

Unfortunately, my hair is very curly, the corkscrew curls kind of curly, and even though i want it to appear long again, it never seems to! It's almost waist length now only when it's wet, but when dry it curls right up to just below my shoulders, so frustrating!

I'd love thick flowing straight hair, but then, i've heard a lot of people want the opposite of their own hair type. ;P

NEED HELP i need to grow my hair long in 2 months about 8 inches if you know anything please tell me my hairs about half an inch long!!!!!!

singingmommy 22 months ago

Don't know if I can help you in 2 months, thats very quick. However, massage your scalp, soak in conditioners, take the best vitamins offered at healthfood stores, eat healthy and don't heat, dye, perm or use much gels and sprays for a while, this will boost fast growth. You might take prenatal vitamins as well. The fastest my hair has ever grown was 6 inches in 9 months.

Madilyn 22 months ago

My hair is not long or beautiful like yours but I'm trying to grow it out. Mine frizzes alot but now I realize that if I let it grow naturally than it forms tiny little curls. I am 15, my hair REFUSES to grow long! It's hardly past my shoulders and it's curly (of fucking course)! My heritage is European/African... I want it so badly. I brush my hair with normal and bristle brush, I massage it well in the shower and rinse it out with cold water.

But it's growing painfully slowly and some people may think it's silly but I've wanted it since I was really, really young. I'm not being ridiculous, it my secret pain...

your hair is so unhealthy. get a freakin' trim, woman. stringy-hair central?

marseille_bill 19 months ago

Singingmommy - Beautiful story; your husband must be very proud of you in the way that you put your femininity before 'convenience'. How do you deal with the 'Locks of Love' people & other people who make negative, unkind comments about your beautiful hair?

singingmommy 19 months ago

Thanks for all the kind responses.

To EMILY: my hair is not unhealthy,it is not stringy, dry and I don't have split ends. These pics don't really show what my hair is like, it is soft, conditioned and shiny and all 5ft. of it is alive so your nasty comment out of 100's of kind people is sure not going to make me cut it.

It's kinda strange how theres people with fried looking hair from all the treatments they have, but because it's short nothing said, but even well-cared for long hair is automatically called nasty or dead.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to everyone individually.

My husband does love my hair marseille, he would cry if I even thought of cutting it.

Yes, the Locks of Love I know are trying to do a really nice thing, but I have had some people actually get on to me for allowing my hair to grow this long without donating it acting like I was selfish.

I just do my best to keep a good attitude to all the negative. I am not intimidated though some people can be very cruel. The only people I've ever heard rude things directed to me about my hair was all women and they all were very bitter in attitude.

I've almost always had long hair, it was waist length until I was about 9 when my mother let me choose my hair cut. Guess what silly me did? UGH! But, it grew back out and I kept it a bit over shoulder length for many years. Then, when I was 20, a friend took me to a very high class salon, and the stylist talked me into cutting it quite short, with longer hair in the front, getting shorter towards the back...you know the look I'm sure. He was crazy. My face is really round. It looked awful. Finally, on New Year's eve 2000/2001, I got it trimmed and never looked back. But, this August 2010, it was half way down my thighs, and while I loved it, I've had multiple sclerosis since 2004 and just couldn't take care of it anymore, so I cut it up to about my lower back, so it's still long, but is about 2 feet shorter. I hope whoever gets that hair in their wig loves it as much as I did!

woah...imma trying to grow my hair to my hips cos im a really impatient person and if i was able to sit on my hair id get impatient with it and cut it all off, but i kno i would love hip-legnth hair. my hair was midway down my chest in august 2010 but then my mom took me to my neighbour to get it cut cos she was a training hairdresser. then my neighbour cut it lopsided so i had to have it cut even shorter to level it out. now its only just past my shoulders and i hate it. im 13 now. how long do u think itll take to grow my hair to my hip bone?

Your husband is a very lucky man. I must congratulate you on growing such wonderful hair. You really are very feminine. I will try to get my wife to follow your tips for healthy hair , but I fear her locks have reached their terminal length at her waist. Good luck with all your future ventures.

Long Hair Girl 13 months ago

I have virgin hair, never been cut. As a result it has been very long most of my life. It is perfectly straight and 12 feet long. I enjoy creating new styles of loops and braids. On special occasions, I let it all down and loose to show off. I will never cut it. Long hair is the ultimate female statement of fashion and sexuality. I also like having 2-3" nails and wearing mini dresses with 8" platform shoes.

Do U recomend any products to help my hair grow fast and past my feet?????????????????? guess i've been watching to much Tangled. LOL! Where did you and your sis get your cute little mommy names, by the way?

singingmommy 12 months ago

I guess anything about us has mommy tagged to it:)

I don't think there is actually one magic formula to grow real long hair, but how you care for it and of course great products together makes for luscious hair.

Tangle she has us all beat though, she can wrap it around a tree and swing off a canyon in 3 seconds LOL:)

I just found this site through a link. First of all, your hair is very beautiful. So glad you will not cut it. I just had 6 inches cut and have been upset about it. In 2001, my hair was knee length. I found an old video that I was in with my hair that long. I was so shocked it was me. I will never ever trim any more than 2 inches at a time. And I don't care what anyone thinks if I have long silver-gray hair to my knees when I'm old. If they don't like it they can lump it. When I have time I will read more about your hair care. Thank you for being an ispiration.

My hair got cut alot when i went to the salon to get it trimmed. IDK if it was cause i had alot of damage or she just didnt know i was trying to grow my hair. its in a weave now, idk if thats good or bad and idk how much my hair has actually grown it been a month but i have been doing whatever i can to make it grow. Idk why my hair hasnt been growing that much, well it as but i guess its falling out. its to my neck after i got it cut but i didnt get to see it that much cause after i got it cut my sister put a weave in it as soon as we got home. before it was on my back kinda but it wasnt very long. also my hair was curled when i got it cut so i dont know the exact legnth. when i was little i let my bunny out then i coudnt find it so i just left it out and went to sleep then it hopped onto the bed and it kept on eating my hair :(. But im 9 now i thinks my bunny chewed my hair when i was7

As a former hairdresser, I have a wonderfully-cheap solution to tangly hair. It may not work for everyone, but try it on a small section of hair, first, to see. The acidity will close down the cuticle (the outer part of the hair). Making the cuticle close down good and tight makes for shinier hair which also shouldn't tangle. Tangles are generally caused by the cuticle (scales) sticking out and getting hooked onto each other. The acid rinse is helpful because most shampoos are highly alkaline and cause the cuticle to blow straight out. The acidity of the rinse pulls them down tight again to the hair cortex, where they can't catch on each other.

For blondes--use lemon juice, and for darker hair use apple cidar vinegar. Cut either juice with water--use 1/3 cup lemon juice or vinegar to 2/3 cup warm water (distilled or soft water are preferable to hard water out of the tap). Rinse hair with it after rinsing out all traces of shampoo.

There are pitifully few shampoos on the market that are worth buying, because most are highly alkaline. Even expensive shampoos generally are alkaline. That's why it's a very good idea to use an acid rinse as your final rinse--to restore the natural acid balance of your hair. This also goes for your skin, too.

To be assured of having a gentle shampoo--make your from soapwort or soap nuts. Look online for recipies for making these shampoos and the ingredients. It may not be worth the effort, if you are very busy. However, your alternative, is to buy one of the very rare healthy shampoos on the market, and they definitely cost more. My daughter bought a coconut oil shampoo at Whole Foods Market, and it was wonderful. Just be careful that it doesn't contain the harsh extracts of coconuts that most cheap shampoos contain. Do some research to learn more. I don't have time to take for a more detailed answer. Anyway, good luck, and I hope the acid rinses help some of you.
